Becherovka

Becherovka production plant

Advanced fire detection system to protect historic Becherovka production plant in Karlovy Vary.

Becherovka is a locally very well-known herbal bitters which is often drunk as a digestif. It is produced in Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic by the Jan Becher company. It’s made from a secret recipe based on more than twenty types of herbs and spices. The story of “Becherovka” began in 1807 when Josef Becher became convinced of the strength of herbs for medical treatments. After two years of experimenting, the recipe for “Becherovka” was born. It was used for the treatment of stomach diseases.

His son Jan Becher was able the create the real marvel by turning the medicinal brew into a herbal liqueur that both visitors and locals wanted to drink, even if they were not ill. Demand grew and grew. During the First World War it was sold in Bohemia, Austria, Germany, Poland, Spain, Italy, Turkey, Egypt and after the end of prohibition also in the United States and England. Becherovka finally became one of Czechoslovakia's most popular export items.

Even today it’s said that only two people know the secret of the entire production process. Every Wednesday, one of them enters the “drogikamr”, where they mix 1.5 tonnes of herbs and spices by hand, all according to the original recipe from 1807. There are about 20 different herbs in the recipe, some from the Karlovy Vary area, but the majority from Central Europe and a few are imported from South America and South Africa.

In 2005 our Czech long-time partner Tribase Networks s.r.o. installed the first Securiton fire alarm systems at the Behcerovka production plant in Karlovy Vary (Karlsbad). A SecuriPro system with several “Transafe ADW’s” and “SecuriRas ASD” guaranteed a reliabale detection of possible fires. The modernisation and upgrade with our most modern SecuriFire system, SecuriHeat ADW and SecurSmoke ASD is currently ongoing.
